Five OEMs unite Supply Chains

Surgere – The Automotive Supply Chain Data Ecosystem.

Detroit, Michigan, June 19, 2018

FIVE OEMs UNITE THEIR SUPPLY CHAINS ON SINGLE DIGITAL PLATFORM “ECOSYSTEM”

Surgere®, the industry leader in providing digitized visibility and control in the automotive supply chain, has announced a large-scale deployment of their shared platform that represents an unprecedented unification of automakers and the growing list of their suppliers. The Surgere digital environment directly tackles the inherent loss and inefficiency in the automotive supply chain and is predicted to create seismic improvements in profitability for both OEMs and their suppliers through shared use of highly accurate technology, dynamic data analytics, and massive collaboration.

The automotive supply chain data ecosystem has being widely deployed and has moved to an Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) committee to form ongoing industry standards on ecosystem subsets such as Returnable Container Data Mapping. Founding members of the Automotive Data Ecosystem Design Group and AIAG Committee include Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, General Motors, Honda North America, Nissan North America, Toyota North America, Adient, Denso North America, MAHLE North America and Yanfeng Automotive Interiors.

“It’s estimated that the automotive industry annually loses more than $2 billion in the supply chain through container, part, and finished vehicle inventory loss and logistics inefficiencies, through a notorious lack of visibility and inherent control”

Surgere’s platform enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their suppliers to operate in a single supply chain data ecosystem, sharing data and analytics to more efficiently move, track and manage container and part inventory between companies. “It’s estimated that the automotive industry annually loses more than $2 billion in the supply chain through container, part, and finished vehicle inventory loss and logistics inefficiencies, through a notorious lack of visibility and inherent control,” said William Wappler, Surgere CEO and the brainchild of the ecosystem.

“We conservatively predict the participants in our digitized ecosystem can achieve double-digit cost savings through highly accurate visibility into the supply chain and through the collaborative power of shared information and analysis across OEMs and their supply base”

“This is a historic event in the automotive industry. Most automotive companies struggle to reduce supply chain costs year over year,” Wappler said. “We conservatively predict the participants in our digitized ecosystem can achieve double-digit cost savings through highly accurate visibility into the supply chain and through the collaborative power of shared information and analysis across OEMs and their supply base,” he said.

Surgere got its name from the Latin word “surgere,” which means “to rise.” Wappler conceived the game-changing platform after a scene in the movie “Twister” in which airborne sensors were used in the vortex of a tornado to send back data on its physical properties in order to warn the community of impending danger. “That’s very much what Surgere does, so to speak,” he said, noting that Surgere’s proprietary software platform leverages highly accurate sensor technologies, in conjunction with advanced data analytics, to indicate not only where inventory resides, but also the critical attributes about that inventory at any given moment, in real time.

“Perhaps the greatest aspect of this incredible coming together is the intent of the Automotive Data Ecosystem Design Group to make the massive collaboration an open community. All technology providers are welcome to participate. All other OEMs and suppliers are welcome to join. Let’s all move past buzzwords and into the new reality of mass collaboration,” Wappler said.

Surgere Introduces Hawkeye™ Finished Vehicle Visibility and Control System

AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 18, 2017

The cloud-based technology provides real-time asset visibility, location, and advanced analytics

Surgere, an industry leader in providing visibility and control within a digitized supply chain (RFID, location and environment sensors, and advanced data analytics), has launched its Hawkeye™ Finished Vehicle Visibility and Control system designed to provide accurate yard management, location and disposition data.

“The Hawkeye™ system was designed to help companies keep track of finished vehicles, in real time, and improve logistics management while reducing errors and cost.”

The new Hawkeye™ system assists manufacturers, logistics providers and ports’ operations to accurately manage finished vehicle movement and delivery using layered technologies. Hawkeye employs patented proprietary software, global location, and sensory-based technology to achieve granular location and accurate auditing of vehicles, while monitoring the environment, during the journey from manufacturing through the delivery process.

The system works by correlating the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) with an encoded RFID (radio frequency identification) tag and a latitude and longitude coordinate. Additional layering allows for GPS location and environment metrics, such as measurable light variances, temperature, humidity, shock and xyz anomalies. Once precise locations are determined, advanced analytics, heat mapping, velocity and variable data are managed by Hawkeye™. Vehicle movement, from final assembly throughout and around manufacturing facilities, is captured and automatically updated in the Hawkeye™ database, storing yard performance characteristics. Hawkeye’s advanced analytics and integration attributes make it the most versatile platform available, even enabling customizable alerts and electronic proof of delivery. Leveraging acquisition technologies, sensors – even on-board telematics to monitor vehicles, Hawkeye’s robust analytics provides deeper and broader insight into Finished Vehicle Logistics’ performance. Detailed mapping and search functionality allow for location tracking of vehicles leaving assembly, parked and awaiting shipment, or even in transit to a destination by road, rail or by sea.

Surgere is currently deploying its new Hawkeye™ system at a major Mid-south automotive manufacturing facility. Such large manufacturing operations often encounter logistical challenges in maintaining accurate tracking and control over vehicle assets.

“Managing vehicle assets can be an enormous challenge for large automotive manufacturing facilities that produce a large number of cars and trucks on a daily basis,” said Michael Silvio, Surgere’s VP of Logistics Innovation. “The Hawkeye™ system was designed to help companies keep track of finished vehicles, in real time, and improve logistics management while reducing errors and cost.”

William Wappler, president and CEO of Surgere, said outdated methods for vehicle location and control are not reliable or timely. “Vehicle inventory control can be somewhat chaotic, but using the technology and cloud-based data analytics of Hawkeye™ manufacturers can reliably locate and manage finished vehicles 24 hours a day,” Wappler said.

Surgere will showcase its new Hawkeye™ product over the next month at both the Automotive Logistics Global Conference in Detroit, Michigan, and the Southern Automotive Conference in Birmingham, Alabama.

Surgere Partners With Fetch Robotics To Unveil Cycle-Counting Robot To Eliminate Inventory Tracking Failures

AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 21, 2017

Surgere’s ROBi platform has successfully completed a full-scale pilot at a Dayton, Ohio, Tier-1 automotive supplier’s distribution center and is ready for large-scale deployment.

ROBi integrates Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology with Fetch Robotic’s award winning mobile robot platform to autonomously capture RFID label information from all angles and directions. Moving on programmable routes, the integrated platform transfers asset identification and location data to Surgere’s cloud-based asset management system. Validating and providing further evidence of where tagged packaging, parts, tools and other assets are located within any given facility and to on-hand inventory. ROBi’s data acquisition accounts for height of stacked or racked product above floor, depth within shelving, and the speed of robotic travel, thus completely removing the need for manual counting and searching. Secondarily, ROBi provides a 3D map of the facility and part location as part of the cycle count. Together, the richness of accurate inventory data along with inventory location greatly enhances inventory management and retrieval.

“Even with WMS systems in place, many of our clients find the fast-paced automotive part and container inventory storage, retrieval, and distribution process to often be ad hoc, time-intensive, error-prone, and costly. Without supporting technology, it can be a process in chaos” said William Wappler, president and CEO of Surgere. “After rigorous testing and evaluation, we’ve arrived at a place where our decision was solidly in favor of robotics over drones and other mobile and fixed devices. We found ROBi is a much more accurate and granular form of RFID data acquisition in automotive environments. Using ROBi technology; inventory tracking takes place constantly, consistently, quietly, safely and accurately. ROBi’s real-time reporting capabilities, location mapping, and advanced sensor technology allows a company to confidently know their inventory is closely monitored 24 hours a day.”

Wappler added that a number of other deployments are also underway. “Make no mistake, ROBi is a game-changer in inventory and cycle counting automation within automotive supply chain digitalization. We are thrilled at the prospects of making our clients more successful.”

A new acquisition method in Surgere’s growing arsenal of visibility and control technology, the data captured by ROBi feeds Surgere’s overarching supply chain visibility and control solution; COS™. This cloud-based analytics engine provides Surgere clients with real-time information and data analytics for both upstream and downstream supply chain activity.

ROBi’s mobility platform comes by way of Fetch Robotics, a San Jose–based technology firm providing robotics solutions for the warehousing and intra-logistics markets. Fetch robots are safe and come equipped with a dynamic obstacle avoidance feature that senses and avoids potential collisions with moving obstacles based on trajectory and speed. In addition, occlusion detection allows Fetch robots to slow when approaching blind corners.

“We are pleased to partner with Surgere and help to automate inventory with our autonomous robot platform,” added Melonee Wise, CEO of Fetch Robotics. “Fetch’s expertise in robotics and Surgere’s leadership in supply chain combine for a formidable solution to bring more transparency and accuracy to inventory.”
